"A Selekt Few" released Saturday 28th April

The Style Selektors 8-Track CD “A Selekt Few” is to be released on Saturday 28th April. Priced at £5, it includes a gatefold sleeve with lots of photos, band biography and contact details should you want to book them for your event.

Although primarily a covers band, TSS are currently writing their own songs at the moment, and hope to get in the studio later in the year to lay them down. It will hopefully be a mixture of pop, Ska and Indie with perhaps the odd acoustic track thrown in for good measure. TSS wanted to do a covers CD to highlight their diversity and adaptability towards music, and the one thing they have promised never to do (and this is in no way with any disrespect to bands who do this) is to just pay tribute to one band alone ie: (Stone Roses, The Jam, The Who, Beautiful South, Stereophonics, etc..) as they never like to “play it safe” and find covering such a wide range of bands more challenging, plus you obviously have to have the confidence and the balls to match it, which both Kev and Bri have in ample quantity… Tickets for The Studio gig on Saturday, 16th June, featuring “The Style Selektors” and The New Age Jam are selling steadily, and half have already been sold (it holds 200) so we advise you to get them quick before they go. Those of you who were at The Style Selektors gigs at The Greensides, Seaton Cricket Club and Tech Sports Club earlier in the year, know only too well what happened there..!! The lads sold all of those gigs out at least 5 weeks prior to the event and unfortunately, people had to be turned away which upset Kev and Bri a lot, but it was the venues that turned people away due to Fire Regulations! The New Age Jam are dojng an acoustic set on the night which as usualy will be phenomenal. Kev is a big fan of TNAJ, and has stated that they are by far the best tribute band to The Jam and Paul Weller in the UK, and he has seen all of them!!

Fantastic gig on Saturday

The Style Selektors would like to say a big massive thanks to all who turned up to The Tech Club, Hartlepool to watch them play their sold out gig last Saturday, it was a fantastic night with everyone (as usual) up on the tables and chairs, and some (not naming any names so as not to embarass Julie Dobson from The Fen’s in Hartlepool) even ended up on the floor several times..!!

The day nearly ended up in disaster as the lads blew their PA up at the soundcheck (just goes to show how much they put into it ha! ha!….Big thanks also to Andy Nixon for organising the evening, and TSS have been booked up for a further 3 gigs there in 2012, so get your tickets even earlier next time

It was also really good to see a lot of people who used to be in the Hartlepool Scooter Club in the 80’s there (Mick Nealon, Mick Corr, Neil Dobson, Mick Neil, Shaun McDonald, Mark Pearson, Mark Harrington, Neil Morrell, Degsy and Julia, Lisa Henderson and the crowd… was also brilliant to see alot of new younger faces all dancing and singing every word to some great old classic hits…

TSS have now finished recording their debut album “A Selekt Few” and it will be officially released at The Penny Black, Hartburn, Stockton on Saturday, April 28th, priced at £5, it features a wide variety of tracks that the lads play live, and just shows how diverse they actually are at being able to switch their vocal performances from Mod to Ska to Indie to ballads etc..

Upcoming gigs include:

April

Sat 28th, Penny Black, Hartburn, Stockton (release of “A Selekt Few”)

May

Sat 5th, Cleveland Hotel, Redcar

Fri 11th, Grand Hotel, Hartlepool

Sat 19th, Seaton Cricket Club, Hartlepool

Sat 26th, Senators, Whitehouse Farm, Stockton

June

Fri 1st, The Smiths Arms, Billingham Green, Billingham

Sat 9th, The Griffin, Thornaby

Sat 16th, The Studio, Tower St, Hartlepool (tickets £4, be quick)

The New Age Jam are also playing an acoustic set on the night, so we are really looking forward to this! Also hopefully in the crowd, will be representatives of a major national band, who are coming to see TSS with a view to TSS supporting them in the future, so come and get behind the lads to help them secure the spot! The band in question derive from the embers of a huge British iconic 3-piece band who topped the singles charts 4 times, 3 of them going straight to number 1… Who is it? You work it out..!!

The Studio has a 200 capacity, and 100 tickets have been sold for this gig already, so we advise you to get yours fast before it sells out.

The Style Selektors "news"

Just a few bits ‘n’ bobs to whet your appetite about The Style Selektors!

TSS are playing their “SOLD OUT” gig at T.D.S.O.B Sports Club in Kev’s home town Hartlepool tomorrow (Saturday 14th April). The gig sold out many weeks ago and TSS want to say a big thanks to all those poeple who bought tickets, it is going to be a great night.

The lads have a surprise song to open up with, and it is a direct tribute to all the scooter boys who Kev used to hang with, and who have all gone through a hell of a lot together in the past 30 or so years. This is what Kev had to say about it:

” I’ve noticed more and more people from my past are showing up at the gigs these days, lads and lasses from school, college or whatever, and without getting too emotional about it all, it’s really nice to see them all again. When we were at school, a certain film came out (i ain’t saying anymore or it will spoil the surprise) and the hysteria that followed it, sort of shaped that part of our lives for a while, and got us into this scene and the music and fashion that went with it. We all truly felt part of something very big and very special (which it was) and we woke to it, went to school with it, went home with it and went to sleep with it, we lived and breathed this scene every waking hour, and we travelled all over the country to rallies and met other like-minded people, and we all had some hilarious times and also some tragic ones but we all stuck by each other whatever the flak you know? For me personally, I’ve been into that scene since 1980 as have alot of people who are going to be at the gig tomorrow night, and for that reason I want to dedicate this opening song to them to remind them, that it was quite possibly this song that directed them onto a path that they have stayed on since… x

Exciting news for The Studio gig

The New Age Jam will be playing an acoustic set at The Style Selektors gig at The Studio, Tower Street, Hartlepool on Saturday, June 16th. This is great news, as Kev is a massive fan of this band and has regularly stated that they are by far the best tribute band to his favourite all time band The Jam in the UK. The Style Selektors e will be dedicating a song to Kev Breckon, who was the drummer and friend and brother-in-law to New Age Jam frontman Mark Simpson. Kev died suddenly after playing an amazing set in Sunderland earlier this year. He is sadly missed, and when Kev McGuire was at Mark’s house a few days ago, he was still visibly shaken by his friends death, and he wants to do something to cheer him and his wife (Kev’s sister) up if only a little. We know The New Age Jam are hugely popular in Hartlepool, and we’re sure you will tunr out in good numbers to cheer them on, and listen to some timeless classics by the best band in the modern world.

Tickets for this gig are selling steadily, with 70 sold already (capacity 200) We would suggest getting yours sooner rather than later as they are having a spate of sell outs lately (tickets for the T.D.S.O.B gig on April 14th sold out in February, and the Seaton Cricket Club gig sold in February sold out in January)….and all this with the credit crunch as well (that’s how good The Style Selektors are)

Top DJ Mick Corr will be onstage throughout the night spinning great tunes from today as well as from the Mod, Ska, Northern Soul, Indie and New Wave genres, so all in all it promises to be a great night, especially as The Style Selektors are performing 2 huge sets, and we have also got The New Age Jam to do an acoustic set…

Tickets are £4 each, and are available from:

Steve Cradock gig "CANCELLED"

Unfortunately, Ocean Colour Scene and Paul Weller band guitarist Steve Cradock’s gig at The Redcar Bowl on Friday March 30th has been cancelled. The Style Selektors were on the same bill, and are gutted that it has had to be cancelled.

Redcar Bowl confirmed that this was due to poor ticket sales caused by sheer lack of promotion by gig promoter Sherry Clarke of Roundel Promotions in Redcar.

The Style Selektors would like to apologise to those fans who had put shift swaps in, hired babysitters, and booked mini-buses in order to attend the gig. They have never used this promoter in the past and certainly won’t be using her again in the future and would warn all bands/venues to stay clear of Roundel Promotions, as a lot of people have wasted a lot of time preparing for this gig, and all the bands on the bill no doubt turned outher gigs down for that date. I know The Style Selektors turned down 4 gigs for Friday March 30th….

The Style Selektors new Album

The Style Selektors are to release an 8-track album in the next few months. The working title for the album at the moment is “A Selekt Few”. It will have a nice mucky mixture of tracks from Ska to Mod and the present day. Rumour is that they may include a self-penned number as well, so watch this space! The tracks are being recorded and mixed presently, and the photography is once again provided by the delicious Jo Winter who is one of the most talented photographers around.

Not a lot of people know this, but both Kev and Bri are brilliant songwriters in their own right. Bri has recorded many tracks with Mike Frankland at Castlegate Studios, and his rough vocal style is reminiscent of artists such as Kelly Jones, Gary Lightbody, David Gray, Van Morrison, Nick Drake, James Morrison (oh you get the picture)..  Bri tends to write about what he sees around him, and mixes it with memories and images from his past. He is currently working on a couple of ska influenced tracks and also a slower anthemic number so look out for those getting aired at the gigs. You may have also noticed that Bri is playing guitar more at the gigs these days. This is something he wants to do more and more, and they find that it lends something to the overall feel of the tunes.

Kev was the main songwriter in Hartlepool legends “The Candy Ranch”. who released 3 singles in total. Firstly, a stomping ska track called “Section 58” in 1989, which just missed the charts. The B-side was “Screaming Nutter” which always went down great. A copy of “Section 58” has just sold for £159 in Japan. The buyer isn’t even a Candy Ranch fan!! he is a trainspotter, and the front cover is a pic of an old train rarely photographed called The Steetley Shunter, and apparently it is a much sought after photo. Kev is sitting on a little goldmine.. he has a box full left. The 2nd single was “Flowergirl”, very much in line with Inspiral Carpets, The La’s etc…it also narrowly missed the charts. The one that did hit the charts in 93’ though, was a song called “Up and Away” which was written to celebrate Hartlepool Utd, and the players of 93’ can also be heard on backing vocals. It was recorded at Hi Level Studios, Newcastle, which is owned by the fantastic Ray Laidlaw (drummer with Lindisfarne), and the producer was Steve Daggett who also produced (dare I say it) Fog on the Tyne by Gazza ha! ha! Steve also done some work at Paul Weller’s Solid Bond Studios in London where Kev spent a great day with Weller in 88’.

The Style Selektors next gig is at Hartlepool United Supporters Club, Duke Street, Hartlepool on Sunday 25th March. Then they are supporting Steve Cradock at Redcar Bowl on Friday 30th March.

Other gigs over the next few months include:
